This Wednesday, we didn’t have to travel far, as we played against KV Wageningen on Marijkeweg. We weren’t too nervous about it—our midweek team had been performing exceptionally well in the indoor league so far, so why should we worry? Back in November, we had already won 21-14, so of course, we were planning to do the same again.

Jurren opened the match right away with a shot, putting us ahead 0-1. Tom then conceded a shot, but the 1-1 was nothing to stress about. After that, I personally let in a running-in ball and a shot, making the 3-1 a bit of a bitter pill to swallow. Jurren wasn’t having it and simply scored another to bring us back to 3-2, keeping us on track for what should have been an easy win. Well… easy? Maybe not, because soon after, the 4-2, 5-2, 6-2, and 7-2 followed in quick succession. Okay, Jurren managed to make it 7-3, but that didn’t help much… Ella let in another shot, and to soften the blow a little, Lotte managed to score one before halftime, bringing us to 8-4.

Coach Reinier wasn’t too pleased… He noticed a chronic lack of communication in both divisions. Why weren’t we making agreements? Who takes over when? When do you step in? What’s the strategy? We were a bit speechless—how had things gone so wrong? We pulled ourselves together, made some tactical agreements, and asked Jurren for a few tips on how to actually get the ball into the korf. Then, we headed into the second half.

Marjolein caught on immediately, quickly scoring the 8-5 with a shot. Unfortunately, another goal against followed, bringing it to 9-5. Tirza had had enough of KVW’s goals and scored a running-in ball. Anne got one in, Marjolein scored twice more, Tirza once again, and then Kamiel… With the score at 9-11, things were getting a bit too easy, so Lotte let in a short shot to keep the tension alive at 10-11. Jurren wasn’t one for suspense, but he was all for a McDonald’s stop on the way home, so he quickly made it 10-12. Then he realized there wasn’t actually a McDonald’s on the way back from KV Wageningen to Haarweg, so he settled for four goals this match. Next time, he’ll just score five, but for now, someone else had to finish the job. Tirza secured a bigger lead with a free shot, after which Jurren let one in—just to really confirm that there would be no McDonald’s tonight. Finally, Marjolein and Tom wrapped things up with their shots, sealing our 11-15 victory.

As I said at the beginning—piece of cake.

Cheers,
Marie-Louise
