As the cold, December days mark the end of 2022, it was the time for Debbie’s squad to take on Nijmegen’s Keizer Karel. This fixture marks the first indoor home game for Débaldérin, and this game was the one to chase our first win. The scene was set, especially with the strong home support that came to watch the game. After the warmup and positive pre-game team chat, the (much nicer) 7:30pm kick-off began the game of red vs yellow.

The start of the game was very cagey, with both teams having opportunities to score. The opposition were the first to break the deadlock, with three quick goals going against the home side. The rest of the first half had a few more goals, but mostly in the favour of the yellow Keizer army. Come the end of the half, Débaldérin were trailing by 4 goals. There were clear ideas formed in the half time chat, with a positive attitude that we could complete the comeback, and hopefully collect the win at the end of the game. It was also noted, by both teams no less, that the floor of the hall this game was particularly slippery.

Unfortunately for Debbie’s team, the start of the second half came with more goals for Keizer Karel, with only a few here and there for the home team. Hope was still strong towards the end of the game, with the last few minutes resulting in 5 goals for Débaldérin. Sadly, it was too little too late. The end of the game quickly came around, and the final score was 9-14 for Keizer Karel.

An awards ceremony followed the game, followed by some well deserved hot showers. The end of the night was a positive, with beer and bitterballen in the sports pub. Lots of chat, with the world cup as background noise, brought the slightly disappointing night to a much brighter ending. Onto the next fixture next week, with hope of a positive end to the 2022 korfbal games.
