With the match against DKOD on Tuesday still in our legs, it was already time for the second game of the season just a few days later, on Saturday. And it was clear that a game had already been played. Matthijs found two matches a bit too much and was absent, Marieke wasn’t feeling entirely fit, and Sara was under painkillers after having three wisdom teeth pulled! Luckily, it was a home game, so we didn’t have to travel far. With Tuesday’s loss still fresh in our minds, the team was very determined to win this time. The opponents were familiar faces, our student friends from Nijmegen, Skunk 3. There were a few players we recognized from the midweek league, but before the game, there wasn’t much time for chit-chat as we needed to stay focused to keep the win in Wageningen.
After a good warm-up, the game started with Deen, Tirza (H), Nathalie, and Marieke in attack, and Willemijn, Tine, Bart, and Tom in defense. Lara and Sara started on the bench, joined shortly before kickoff by loyal supporter Jurren.
Débaldérin had a strong start, scoring plenty while conceding very little. The first six goals were all for the home team, scored by six different players – now that’s team spirit! After ten minutes, Marieke had given everything she had and was substituted by Lara. When the score hit 7-0, Skunk decided it was time to get on the board, scoring twice in quick succession. Tine and Nathalie each added a beautiful shot before halftime, giving us a comfortable 9-2 lead going into the break.
The second half also started strong, continuing the scoring streak from the first half with goals from Nathalie, Tom, and Willemijn. Skunk managed to find the korf more often in the second half, scoring a few goals themselves. In the final phase of the game, both sides traded occasional goals, but there was no real last-minute offensive from Skunk. With a final score of 17-10, the victory stayed in Wageningen, the weekend team won its second match, and the first points were secured!
